The SPD state executive recommends that its members accept the coalition agreement with the CDU. "As the SPD, we take responsibility for Saxony," said Chairman Henning Homann in a statement. They will ensure that there is no cooperation and no majorities with the far-right AfD in the future. "This is our historic responsibility."
The result of the state elections poses major challenges for all democratic forces, according to the resolution passed by the SPD state executive. "With the coalition, we are taking on a shaping role with investments in the future."
It was not possible to push through all ideas and goals, which is part of the nature of a coalition. In addition, everyone must be aware "that as part of a minority government, we are dependent on the democratic opposition groups."
Voting has already begun
The Social Democrats have already started voting. The majority of the current 4,600 or so members received an email with a voting link on Friday. Around 1,000 members are voting by postal ballot. The corresponding documents were sent out on Thursday.
The members have until December 15 to cast their vote, the count will take place on December 16 and the result will be announced. The two chairpersons Kathrin Michel and Henning Homann announced that the result will be binding for the state executive committee.
CDU to decide on December 14
The state executive committee of the CDU will meet on Friday. The Christian Democrats will decide whether to join the coalition at a state party conference on December 14.
If both parties agree to the agreement, the election of the Minister President could take place at the state parliament session on December 18. The necessary change to the agenda is also possible at short notice.
