Following the break-up of the traffic light coalition, the parties are gearing up for an early general election in February. The SPD's top candidate in Saxony is co-leader Kathrin Michel.

SPD state leader Kathrin Michel heads her party's list for the Bundestag elections. The 61-year-old was voted into first place in Dresden. According to the party, 84.8 percent of delegates voted for her. The mother of three has been a member of the Bundestag and co-chair of the Saxon SPD since 2021.

"Especially for Saxony and my region, Lusatia, we need concrete investments in modern technologies, well-paid jobs and sustainable energies," explained Michel. She advocates a positive image of Lusatia and Saxony. At the same time, she is campaigning for paragraph 218 to be removed from the penal code. Abortions should no longer be a criminal offence, she said. "Women must be allowed to make this difficult decision personally and I am fighting for them to be able to do so with dignity and without fear of stigmatization."

The previous alliance between the SPD, Greens and FDP in the federal government has broken down, meaning that a new Bundestag is expected to be elected in February. In the 2021 election, the Social Democrats won 19.3% of the vote in Saxony. This put them in second place behind the AfD and ahead of the traditionally strong CDU. In the state election in September, however, they only achieved 7.3 percent.
