BSW politician Marcel Machill is accused of violating his duty of neutrality as a professor. He himself admits that he made a mistake.

Saxon BSW politician Marcel Machill has to justify himself for using an office room at Leipzig University for party purposes. According to the report, the journalism professor held such an event in his office at the beginning of January. The Greens accuse him of violating his duty of neutrality and have initiated an investigation into the case by means of a minor interpellation.

Greens see violation of Leipzig University's house rules

"The unauthorized party event in his offices casts considerable doubt on the correct separation of university official duties and Prof. Dr. Machill's private political activities," explained MP Claudia Maicher. This is a clear violation of the house rules of Leipzig University.

Machill admits mistake

Machill admitted the mistake. It had been a 15-minute meeting of four people. "A hectic pace and inexperience played a part, but of course it was a really stupid mistake for which I am very sorry and for which I have asked the principal to apologize. Something like that won't happen again," Machill told the German Press Agency. He is the lead candidate for the Sahra Wagenknecht alliance in the Bundestag elections on February 23.

Accusations had also recently been made against Machill that he had used donations for the education of students for his own trips. The 56-year-old professor firmly rejected the accusations. The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance saw this as a campaign.

Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht deplores campaign

"Ever since the BSW achieved good election results in the East and conducted coalition negotiations, our top candidates and ministers have been personally attacked," explained Sabine Zimmermann, head of the BSW in Saxony. Personal disparagement has no place in an election campaign; in the interests of the citizens, we must return to a factual debate.
