The Saxon SPD is optimistic about possible exploratory talks with the aim of coalition negotiations in Saxony. The so-called introductory talks came to an end on Wednesday evening with the adoption of a joint paper. What unites the three very different partners is a "shared responsibility for ensuring that this state has a stable government", said party leader Henning Homann in Dresden.
"We firmly believe that a stable government is the best form of cooperation for Saxony," explained the SPD leader. The state needs a clear strategy for the future. Only a majority government could achieve this. A minority government would mean seeking a majority in parliament for every single political decision. "This would result in piecemeal work. That is not in the interests of this country."
Social Affairs Minister Petra Köpping, who ran as the SPD's lead candidate in the state elections on 1 September, expressed her appreciation for the pleasant interaction between the partners in the recent talks. "Everyone has made a visible effort to shape things together. We don't yet know whether this will end up being the case." Common ground was quickly found on topics such as education and healthcare policy.
The SPD negotiating group now wants to propose to the party's state executive that it enter into exploratory talks.
