Around 240,000 people in the district of Central Saxony are being called upon to elect a new district administrator today (8.00 am). Four men and one woman are running for the office. The Free Voters and CDU are putting Freiberg's Lord Mayor Sven Krüger in the running. District councillor Jens Tamke is running for the AfD, while the SPD has nominated Mario Lorenz. The Left Party has nominated Cindy Reimer - the only woman on the ballot paper. Stefan Trautmann is standing for the far-right Free Saxons.
The election is necessary because Dirk Neubauer has resigned from the post early. He had become district administrator in 2022 as a non-party candidate with the support of the SPD, Left Party and Greens. He would normally have been in office until 2029, but announced his resignation last July. He had justified this decision primarily with personal hostility from the right and a lack of opportunities to assert himself. He has not been in office since October.
Eligible voters can cast their votes at polling stations until 6.00 pm. Then the counting begins. If none of the candidates receive more than half of the votes, there will be a second round of voting. This would take place at the same time as the federal election on February 23.
