In the nationwide Stadtradeln competition, Leipzig took third place this year behind Berlin and the Hannover region. The trade fair city has never done so well before, the city administration announced on Friday. The approximately 18,000 participants cycled more than 3.5 million kilometers from September 1 to 21. Last year, Leipzig had landed with 2.4 kilometers in 6th place.

The nationwide campaign is about getting as many people as possible to switch to the bike. The kilometers cycled during the campaign period are recorded online or via app. More than 2800 municipalities are now taking part in the city cycling program. Leipzig has been a regular participant since 2009.
