A mood of crisis among dentists in Saxony. Practice closures, a lack of young talent and excessive bureaucracy are already jeopardizing the provision of comprehensive care for patients, they say.

Dentists in Saxony are demanding better framework conditions for their work. In order to prevent practices from dying out and to secure dental care, a list of demands has been sent to the members of the new Saxon state parliament, according to the Dental Health Information Center. Among other things, it calls for a reduction in bureaucracy, support for the establishment of dental practices, the introduction of a state dentist quota at universities and the abolition of budgeting.

According to the chamber, it is becoming increasingly difficult to get an appointment with a local dentist in a timely manner. In some regions, this is already a reality.
"The high average age of the Saxon dental profession and the lack of young talent mean that fewer and fewer dentists are available to care for patients. This trend is exacerbated by the high level of dissatisfaction with the current framework conditions for dental work," it said.

Two thirds of dentists are considering retiring early

The State Dental Association referred to the results of a representative online survey of colleagues. According to the results, more than half of those surveyed would no longer set up a practice. 95 per cent felt overburdened by the large number of bureaucratic tasks, 79 per cent felt that their processes were impaired by digitalization far removed from their practice. 82 percent expected their economic situation to deteriorate this year. Two thirds were considering withdrawing from care prematurely.

The Dental Health Information Center is a joint body of the Saxony Dental Association and the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Dentists and is responsible for the press and public relations work of dentists in Saxony.
