The chairwoman of the Saxony State Association of Jewish Communities, Nora Goldenbogen, has died. This was announced by the association's secretariat. Goldenbogen died during the night. She was 75 years old. Members of the Saxon state government expressed their deepest condolences.
Goldenbogen was born in Dresden in 1949. As a historian with a doctorate, she published numerous works on the history of Jews in Dresden, Saxony and the GDR. She had been chairwoman of the state association of Jewish communities since 2017.
Saxony's Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) wrote on Platform X that Goldenbogen had fought tirelessly against anti-Semitism. Her death leaves a huge gap.
Minister of Culture Christian Piwarz (CDU) paid tribute to Goldenbogen as a fighter for understanding and against forgetting. He said that her legacy gave rise to the obligation that the state and society must not allow any spaces in which hostility towards Jews goes unchallenged. Social Affairs Minister Petra Köpping (SPD) recalled a highly committed personality "who always stood up for solidarity with Jews in Saxony".
