Whether in a local heritage association or a large foundation, the Free State of Saxony can count on the diverse commitment of its citizens. Every year, it awards prizes for special commitment to society.

This year's Saxon Citizens' Award goes to two associations and four individuals who are committed to democracy, local and regional history, bees, public spirit and young girls in West Africa. The award winners and nominees stand for all those "who care and lend a hand, for confidence, humanity and cohesion", said Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) in a press release distributed before the award ceremony in the Frauenkirche Dresden this evening. "This multifaceted commitment is indispensable and deserves great respect and recognition."

Award endowed with 5,000 euros each

The award, endowed with 5,000 euros each, goes to two pastors in Sebnitz who established a forum where people can discuss controversial issues, and to a woman in Groitzsch who organized events, excursions and trips for older women for over 30 years. The Erla-Crandorf local history and school association was also honored for its research and communication of regional history and the preservation of a historic mine gallery, the Oberlichtenau Bee Museum and a man in Vogtland who repairs used sewing machines for young girls in West Africa as a gift at the end of their tailoring training in order to earn a living for a family.

The prize has been awarded since 2011 by the Free State of Saxony, the Frauenkirche Foundation and Commerzbank's Dresden Cultural Foundation for special commitment to other people and coexistence in society. Districts and independent cities can nominate projects, initiatives or individuals - according to the State Chancellery, 62 nominations were received this time.
