Dynamo Dresden announces on the second anniversary of Hans-Jürgen "Dixie" Dörner's death that the jersey number 3 will no longer be awarded.

Dynamo Dresden will no longer wear jersey number 3. This was announced by the third-division soccer club on Friday to mark the second anniversary of the death of Dynamo legend Hans-Jürgen "Dixie" Dörner. Dörner always wore the "3". He died on January 19, 2022 at the age of 70.

"Dixie will remain a stroke of luck for Dynamo and the sport as a whole for eternity. He was and is a great role model for countless soccer fans," said Dynamo President Holger Scholze in the press release. For more than five decades, Dörner not only stood up for the colors of the city of Dresden and the club on the pitch, but also off the pitch.

"Dixie is always present in our thoughts and in our daily work for our club. The wonderful and unique honor of never assigning his shirt number 3 again in the future is therefore a fitting tribute to his merits, with which we want to show: Dear Dixie, we miss you immensely, but we will remember you! We adore you and will keep your memory alive for future generations! You will live on in our hearts! Because legends never die!" said Scholze

Dörner played 558 times for Dynamo, became champion and cup winner five times each and led the GDR to Olympic gold in Montreal in 1976. He played 100 international matches.
