Basketball cup winners Syntainics MBC have found a replacement for the injured Martin Breunig. Eddy Edigin comes from local rivals Niners Chemnitz until the end of the season, the MBC announced. Center Breunig had injured his finger and will probably not play again this season. The 33-year-old will undergo surgery by a hand specialist in Halle next Wednesday.
Edigin, who is four years younger than Breunig, will play in his first home game after winning the cup three weeks ago against Würzburg Baskets (3 p.m./Dyn) on Sunday. The 2.03-meter center has played 138 games in the German league for Baskets Bamberg, Hamburg Towers, MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg and Chemnitz in the past seven-and-a-half years.
On the international stage, Edigin, who grew up in Regensburg, gained experience with Hamburg in the Eurocup (17 games) and with Ludwigsburg and Chemnitz in the Champions League (34). The Nigerian-born player also played once for Bamberg in the Euroleague.
