Timo Werner will apparently not move permanently from RB Leipzig to Tottenham Hotspur. According to a report in the Mirror, the soccer club from the English Premier League will not take up the option to buy the 28-year-old. The Londoners could have signed Werner, who is on loan from the Saxons until the end of the season, for the equivalent of around ten million euros.
Werner had already been loaned to Tottenham for six months last season and the deal was extended in the summer. The striker wanted to get his faltering career back on track on the island. However, Werner barely got a foothold in the sport and is now often left out.
Tel gets preference
As a result, the 57-time international was left out of the squad for the Europa League. Instead, Spurs included Mathys Tel, who is on loan from Bayern Munich, in the international squad.
Werner has been absent since mid-January due to a thigh injury. Although he was fit again for the Spurs game at Ipswich Town around a week and a half ago, coach Ange Postecoglou did not include him in the matchday squad. In the middle of last week, Werner was allowed to play the last eight minutes in the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City.
Transfer to New York?
The Swabian is unlikely to have a future in Leipzig either. His future could lie in the US MLS league. There were already rumors in the winter that Werner could move to the New York branch of RB, where Emil Forsberg is winding down his career and Sandro Schwarz is working successfully as a coach. A transfer in the winter did not materialize, but according to a "Bild" report, Werner could well imagine a move in the summer.
The striker moved from Leipzig to Chelsea FC for 53 million euros at the height of his career in the summer of 2020. Two years later, RB brought him back for €20 million, but sustained success failed to materialize, which is why they went their separate ways again in January 2024.
