23 million euros in damage caused by severe weather in Saxony

Car insurers had to spend around 23 million euros on damage caused by severe weather in Saxony last year. This is roughly the same level as the previous year, according to figures released by the German Insurance Association (GDV) on Wednesday. In both 2021 and 2022, about 7500 losses due to storms, hail, lightning or flooding had been reported in the Free State. Germany-wide Saxonia is thereby on place 13 of the country-wide Kfz natural hazard balance, scarcely behind Thuringia. Most strongly affected were drivers according to federation data in Rhineland-Palatinate.

In total the auto-insurers came away in the past year however more favorably than expected. They registered Germany-wide about 900 million euros of damage by forces of nature, as the federation further communicated. The companies had recorded less storm damage than the long-term average. Expected had been a loss of one billion euros.

"The damage caused by natural hazards was about ten percent below the expected value for 2022," said GDV Chief Executive Jörg Asmussen in a press release. At the same time, according to the data, the hurricane series "Ylenia," "Zeynep" and "Antonia" in February 2022 alone had caused damage of around 125 million euros to motor vehicles.
