In April, frost caused severe damage to vines and fruit trees. Aid is available for affected farmers.

From Friday, fruit and wine growers affected by frost damage can apply for European crisis aid. Applications can be submitted to the State Office for the Environment, Agriculture and Geology until January 8, in addition to any state aid already available, according to the authority. Up to 46.5 million euros are available in Germany to support the farms affected by the frost damage.

Late frosts on the night of April 23, 2024 caused major damage in Saxony's fruit and wine-growing regions. Although frost is not unusual at this time of year, plant growth was already very advanced this year due to the unusually mild temperatures in the first quarter. The sub-zero temperatures were therefore particularly devastating.
