Visitors to Leipzig Zoo will no longer be able to see Amaru the lion. He is heading south. This is just the beginning of big changes for the lion savannah in Leipzig.

The lion Amaru has left Leipzig Zoo. According to the zoo, the one-and-a-half-year-old tom is on his way to Spain, where he will form a pride with two lionesses in a zoo.

"The male has developed very well and has recently shown a clear interest in his mother, so it is a good time to leave his mother's pride," said senior curator Johannes Pfleiderer. Even in the wild, young males leave their mother's pack when they reach sexual maturity so as not to jeopardize genetic diversity.

Amaru's brother Bahati is expected to leave the zoo in spring. Mother Kigali and daughter Malu will then stay behind in the lion savannah for the time being. A suitable male will be added at a later date to continue the breeding of African lions.

Amaru and Bahati are two of a total of four lions born at Leipzig Zoo in July 2023. As the father of the offspring, male lion Majo, died before the cubs were born, lioness Kigali raised the offspring alone.
