More than 800,000 people are expected in Leipzig this year as the International Gymnastics Festival takes place from May 28 to June 1. This event is not only the biggest event of the year in Leipzig, but also a magnetic event for sports lovers and culture enthusiasts. The program goes beyond simple sports competitions and offers a variety of attractions and engagement opportunities for visitors and participants alike.
The Turnfest offers a wide range of events, including competitions in 23 different sports, which include ten German championships. But there are not only highlights on a sporting level; cultural and social events are also part of the program. With over 5000 participants taking part in various galas and a professional show program, the gymnastics festival offers something for every taste. In addition, there are more than 400 further education opportunities, ranging from practical workshops to theoretical seminars.
The venues are spread throughout the city, including some of Leipzig's most famous squares. The Leipzig Trade Fair, the Red Bull Arena, the Quarterback Arena, the Egidius Braun Sports School, the Bruno Plache Stadium and the Stadium of Peace are just some of the 40 or so venues where events will take place.
The number of visitors is expected to be around 750,000, in addition to around 80,000 active athletes and 4,000 volunteers. The atmosphere in the city will be lively and dynamic due to the large number of guests expected.
For those interested in buying tickets, there is a considerable choice. Tickets are available for 24 different sporting events with prices ranging from 20 to 50 euros, although many tickets are already sold out. Interested parties are advised to book events via the official website turnfest2025-tickets.reservix.de .
Sportspeople still have until March 3 to register for the gymnastics festival. This extension of the registration deadline offers an additional opportunity for all those who were originally unable to register in time. Registrations can only be made via the turnportal.dtb.de
As far as accommodation is concerned, the communal accommodation in Leipzig is already at full capacity. 35,000 people are being accommodated in 150 schools in the city. However, there is a possibility that further capacity could potentially become available in the coming weeks.
For those who would prefer to stay in a hotel, using the usual online booking platforms is recommended. Although availability is dwindling, there are still a few offers within Leipzig and in surrounding areas such as Markranstädt, Zwenkau or Schkeuditz.
The chance to volunteer for the gymnastics festival is still available. However, individual applications are now only possible for the "school quarters/accommodation" area, while clubs can register a team of up to 15 people. These teams are entitled to a commitment bonus of 2,000 euros per club.
The economic significance of the gymnastics festival for Leipzig is considerable. According to sports mayor Heiko Rosenthal (Die Linke), investments of 17 million euros are required to host the festival, but a value creation of 58 million euros is expected for the city.
In summary, the International Gymnastics Festival in Leipzig is an outstanding event with an extensive program that combines sport, culture and education and appeals to both local and international guests.
