Everyone's been there: you're strolling through the city center, perhaps shopping or simply enjoying the hustle and bustle, and suddenly your bladder starts to push hard. The toilet light is red, the nearest café seems miles away and the pressure makes time seem to pass at a snail's pace. No need to panic - emergency toilet use is now made easier thanks to a new online map from the city of Leipzig.
Public toilets: Overview of locations now available at leipzig.de
The City of Leipzig operates public toilets in outdoor areas at over 20 locations, which are open around the clock. These can now be found on a clear map created by the Office for Geoinformation and Land Use Planning on the website www.leipzig.de/toiletten. Click on the location for detailed information.
The city toilets in Leipzig are open around the clock. They cost 50 cents to use - you can pay with coins or an EC card. People with disabilities can open and use them free of charge in the usual way with the Europe-wide standardized Euro key. This only allows access to a limited group of people who are dependent on special facilities and equipment. Separate security is necessary to protect the facilities, some of which are very expensive, from vandalism and to ensure hygiene.
In Leipzig, not all public toilets are owned or provided by the city. Depending on the location, they are privately or municipally owned and are therefore subject to different rules and conditions. In some P+R parking lots, there is a non-barrier-free cubicle and a separate (standing) urinal in addition to the barrier-free cubicle. The permanent operation of the barrier-free "City-Toilet" is guaranteed by the company RBL Media GmbH.
According to the "Overall urban implementation concept for public sanitary facilities in the city of Leipzig" adopted by the city council in March, the current total number of 22 sanitary facilities is not yet sufficient for the high demand in urban parks and green spaces, especially in the summer months. The aim is an initial expansion of the current stock in heavily frequented locations.
A comprehensive analysis of the public space identified 40 priority locations. The following 12 locations will initially be provided with publicly accessible sanitary facilities: the area around Leipzig Central Station, Leipzig Market Square, Lene-Voigt-Park, Rabet district park, Clara-Zetkin-Park, Rosenthal, Bismarck Tower in Lützschena-Stahmeln, Gorkistraße/Löbauer Straße transfer stop, Mariannenpark, Naturbad Nordost, the area around Mockauer Post and Karl-Heine-Platz.
