After around six months of construction, the expansion of Georg-Herwegh-Straße in Wiederitzsch between Seehausener Straße and Messe-Allee has now been completed. The road was reopened to traffic three weeks earlier than originally planned. Michael Jana, Head of the Mobility and Civil Engineering Office, says: "This was possible because the winter was particularly mild, but especially because of the good cooperation with the construction company, the understanding residents and all the companies involved. I would like to thank them all."
The section of Georg-Herwegh-Straße was in a very poor condition, and the upgrade has now eliminated various sources of danger: Damaged asphalt and paving were replaced, the intersections in the area as well as the pedestrian crossings were converted to be barrier-free and equipped with a guidance system for the blind.
The background to the work was also the planned new school building, which is to be built between Seehausener Straße, Georg-Herwegh-Straße and Messe-Allee. The construction site access road will run along Georg-Herwegh-Straße in future. To ensure that pupils can reach the new campus safely, the footpath and cycle path coming from Messe-Allee will now be continued as a separate footpath and cycle path in the direction of the LVB stops on Seehausener Straße. A new traffic light system was also put into operation on Messe-Allee to further improve school route safety.
19 trees were planted in the green areas and rainwater will be collected via a drainage trough in future. This will enhance the ecological value of the area and perform the functions of a "sponge city" - in other words, the rainwater will not be channeled but stored in the area. These measures were funded by the federal government's Climate and Transformation Fund. In total, the construction costs amounted to around 826,000 euros.
In summary, it can be said that the modernization of Georg-Herwegh-Straße has not only improved traffic connections, but also contributes to the ecological and infrastructural development of the region. Residents can look forward to a safer, greener and modernized environment.
