Late on Thursday afternoon, a serious traffic accident occurred on the federal highway 38 near the Neue Harth junction. A 50-year-old man of Polish origin lost his life and four other people were injured.
The accident occurred on the carriageway towards Dresden. Due to a previous accident in the area of the southern junction, there was already a traffic jam in the surrounding area. The driver of a Mercedes Actros, 50 years old, drove into the end of the traffic jam for an as yet unexplained reason. He collided with a Skoda Fabia, driven by a 55-year-old man who was carrying his 80-year-old co-driver, and with a Mercedes A-Class, driven by a 21-year-old woman.
The truck driver tried to swerve out of the way and collided with another truck, a DAF, driven by a 59-year-old man. The driver of the Mercedes Actros was trapped in his cab and suffered such serious injuries that he died at the scene.
After the collision, the DAF truck slid into another truck, a Mercedes with a trailer, whose driver is 62 years old. At the same time, a VW Transporter (60), a VW Caddy (34) and a VW Golf (69) were involved in the accident.
As a result of the accident, the driver of the Skoda suffered injuries that required hospitalization. His 80-year-old passenger, the 21-year-old A-Class driver and the Caddy driver had to be treated as outpatients.
The damage to property cannot yet be quantified. The BAB 38 is currently fully closed in the direction of Dresden. It is expected to be reopened in one to two hours. The accident is being investigated with the assistance of experts from Dekra.
Ahead of this, at around 3:25 p.m., another accident occurred in the area of the southern junction. A 39-year-old driver of a Mercedes CLK 200 Kompressor hit a stopped Mercedes Actros. The 39-year-old was seriously injured as a result, with property damage amounting to around 25,000 euros.
