Opera singer José Carreras is collecting donations for his leukemia foundation with a television gala for the 29th time. The charity show from Leipzig will be broadcast live on MDR on Thursday (14.12., 20.15). According to MDR, presenters Stephanie Müller-Spirra and Sven Lorig will host the evening alongside 77-year-old Carreras. The fundraiser will be supported by national and international stars. Herbert Grönemeyer, Wincent Weiss, Marianne Rosenberg, Johnny Logan and Christina Stürmer, among others, will provide musical entertainment.
Actors such as Mariella Ahrens and Ronja Forcher as well as sports celebrities such as former professional boxer Axel Schulz and former figure skater Katarina Witt will take their places at the donation phones.
José Carreras himself was diagnosed with leukemia in 1987. A few years after his recovery, he set up his foundation, which has been supporting scientific research, infrastructure and social projects ever since. According to the organizers, more than 235 million euros have been raised for the fight against leukaemia in just under three decades.
