The main stage is set up a few days before the opening of the Capital of Culture year in Chemnitz. This was erected around the Karl Marx Monument, probably Chemnitz's best-known landmark. Chemnitz will kick off its year as European Capital of Culture with a big show on Saturday (January 18). In addition to prominent guests, tens of thousands of visitors are expected in the city.
Admission to the opening show begins at 5 p.m. and there will be security checks at the entrances. According to the city, there is room for around 20,000 people. A number of streets in the city center will be closed due to the events. The city recommends that visitors use free park & ride parking spaces and travel into the city by streetcar or bus. There are also additional trains to and from Chemnitz. The area at the Marx Monument is a good ten-minute walk from the main train station.
