Aircraft noise has decreased slightly at Leipzig/Halle Airport - but many local residents hardly feel any relief. Training flights in particular continue to cause annoyance.

Following the introduction of a new departure procedure at Leipzig/Halle Airport, aircraft noise levels around the airport have improved slightly. This was announced by the Saxon aircraft noise protection officer after the spring meeting of the Aircraft Noise Commission (FLK) in Schkeuditz. The airport had introduced a so-called flat take-off procedure, which is mainly used for certain DHL cargo aircraft. Measurements have now confirmed that this procedure leads to lower noise levels on the ground.

A slight year-on-year decrease in aircraft noise pollution was also observed overall. According to the airport, this is primarily due to fewer aircraft movements in cargo traffic, while passenger numbers increased slightly. However, the complaints situation has not changed significantly.

Planned change of course halted

In addition, German Air Traffic Control (DFS) reported that a desired change to the departure corridor between Krostitz and Delitzsch will not be implemented for the time being. The district of North Saxony had applied for this change in order to reduce aircraft noise pollution in this area. However, an alternative departure procedure would affect significantly more residents and also worsen the CO2 balance, it said.

Accordingly, there are increasing complaints about training flights, during which aircraft regularly complete aerodrome circuits. The airport pointed out that such flights were necessary and could not be restricted due to legal operating obligations. The FLK asked that the issue be regularly monitored and reported on in future.
