In 2023, 2,278 apartments were forcibly evicted in Saxony. This was announced by the Federal Ministry of Justice in response to a question from Left Party MP Caren Lay. In 2022, there were 2,265 evictions. According to Lay, the most common reason for people losing their homes is rent debt.
In a comparison of federal states, Saxony is in the top third for evictions. Only in North Rhine-Westphalia (8,998), Bavaria (2,774) and Lower Saxony (2,501) were the figures even higher, although in the latter state no distinction was made in some cases between evictions from apartments and commercial premises.
In Rhineland-Palatinate, which has a similar population to Saxony, the number of evictions was only half as high. There, 1,125 apartments were evicted last year. Nationwide, the number of evictions rose from 29,057 in 2022 to 30,275 last year.
The Left Party's rental and housing expert Caren Lay called for a cap on rents and stronger protection against dismissal. She criticized the German government for failing to better protect tenants.
