In Görlitz, it has long been possible to try out living in the city as an experiment in urban development. Now the project aims to attract scientists to the city on the Neisse.

New employees of the large-scale research center for astrophysics currently under construction will be able to try out living in Görlitz from May. The German Center for Astrophysics (DZA) has announced that three apartments will be available for the scientists and their families in the town on the Neisse. The project is being realized with the Interdisciplinary Centre for Transformative Urban Redevelopment (IZS) and other partners.

The influx of specialists from Germany and abroad is essential for the development of the astrophysics center. At the same time, Görlitz is still struggling with vacancies and needs new residents. The trial apartment for the astrophysicists is intended to address both problems.

The aim is to make it easier for skilled workers to move in.

Up to twelve employees and their families would have the opportunity to get to know Görlitz for three months. The pilot project aims to show what is needed to facilitate the influx of skilled workers.

The first round of trial living was already carried out in Görlitz in 2008. Participants are provided with apartments from the municipal housing association free of charge. It is an experiment in urban development that is intended to help prevent emigration and vacancies.

The German Center for Astrophysics is one of two major research centers that will be established in Saxony as part of the coal phase-out. The federal government is funding the establishment with 1.2 billion euros each. The other research center is being built in Delitzsch near Leipzig and will focus on the circular economy in chemistry.
