The wind blows in the north and is used as renewable energy. The electricity is mainly consumed in southern Germany. The expansion of the grid is on its way.

Construction work on the future Suedostlink north-south electricity highway can begin on a stretch of around 270 kilometers through Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony and Thuringia. The Federal Network Agency has handed over the third and final planning approval decision to the 50Hertz project team, as the company announced. The approval for around 88 kilometers through the Börde district and the Salzland district completes the construction rights for the 50 Hertz part.

Overhead line instead of underground cable in the north

On the northernmost 18 kilometers, between Wolmirstedt near Magdeburg and Niederndodeleben in the municipality of Hohe Börde, the direct current connection is to be built as an overhead line and not in the form of an underground cable. An existing alternating current line will be replaced. The cables of the Suedostlink will then run together with the cables of existing alternating current overhead lines on new shared pylons, according to the statement.

The Suedostlink will transport electricity from wind energy from the north to the south of Germany, running as far as the Isar site near Landshut in Bavaria. According to the company 50Hertz, the link can transport the electricity from around 1,400 wind turbines to the consumption centers in the south. It is responsible for the northern half of the project through Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony and Thuringia. Project partner TenneT is responsible for the route through Bavaria. The first electricity is expected to flow along the Suedostlink from 2027.
