Two further semiconductor plants are to be completed in the Saxon state capital over the next two years. This will create 3,000 jobs.

Significant progress is being made at the two Dresden construction sites for microchip factories. Excavation work at the future factory of the Taiwanese semiconductor group TSMC is almost complete, according to a spokesperson for the company. Almost 500,000 cubic meters of earth have been moved for the ten-meter-deep excavation pit.

Shell construction to start in February

The factory will reportedly be 200 meters long and 200 meters wide. Several tower cranes are currently being erected in this area. At the same time, a temporary construction container facility is being built on the construction site. The shell construction work began in mid-February. This means that another milestone has been reached on schedule, according to the spokesperson. In the next step, floor slabs will be poured over several weeks.

"We are on schedule," the spokesperson summarized. The reason for the good progress of the project is therefore the good cooperation with contractors, subcontractors and the local authorities.

First TSMC plant in Europe

The official ground-breaking ceremony for the chip factory took place last August. The investment of a good ten billion euros is a joint project between the Taiwanese industry giant TSMC and Bosch, Infineon and NXP Semiconductor. TSMC is to hold 70 percent of the company, with the other partners each holding ten percent.

The start of production is planned for 2027. The focus is on chips for the automotive industry. 2,000 jobs are associated with TSMC's first factory in Europe. The plant is called the European Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (ESMC). The Federal Ministry of Economics is funding the project with five billion euros.

Infineon also "fully on schedule" with new factory

Progress is also being made on the second semiconductor construction site in Dresden. The manufacturer Infineon, which is already based in Dresden, is building another factory in the north of the state capital. This project is also "right on schedule", as Raik Brettschneider, Managing Director at Infineon Dresden, said on request. The shell of the building has largely been completed. "The fact that we are making such excellent progress is also thanks to the very good cooperation with the authorities."

Production in the "Smart Fab" is set to start as early as next year. Semiconductors for the automotive industry and the renewable energy sector will then be manufactured there to promote decarbonization and digitalization. The expansion is expected to create around 1000 new jobs.
