The green light has been given for the construction of a new terminal at the port of Riesa. The State Directorate of Saxony has issued the corresponding planning approval decision, as the authority announced. The terminal is to be built on the site of the old port and will enable container handling between inland waterway vessels, railroads and trucks. The project was applied for by Sächsische Binnenhäfen Oberelbe GmbH (SBO).
The planned terminal will reportedly have a capacity of 100,000 container units per year. Six loading tracks for rail traffic, road connections for trucks as well as container handling and intermediate storage areas are to be built. Two new gantry cranes are also planned. Construction will take place exclusively on SBO land.
The existing container terminal on the north side of the port has reached its capacity limit. According to SBO, 33,748 container units were handled in Riesa last year.
