E-mobility is booming worldwide - but not in Germany. In Saxony, too, the number of electric car registrations fell significantly last year. A missed opportunity, according to experts.

A difficult year for e-mobility in Saxony: the number of newly registered electric cars fell significantly last year. According to statistics from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) in Flensburg, only 7,801 pure electric vehicles were newly registered in 2024 - 4,088 fewer than in the previous year. This corresponds to a decline of more than a third. The "Freie Presse" had previously reported on this.

In contrast, there was an upturn in hybrid models: new registrations in Bavaria rose by around 18 percent compared to the previous year.

Conventional drive systems also recorded slight growth. The number of newly registered diesel cars rose by a good four percent, while the number of petrol cars increased by around one percent. Overall, the number of new registrations across all drive types increased by around two percent to 90,901 - the highest figure since 2021.

Not just a Saxon problem

A massive slump in sales of e-vehicles was also recorded nationwide. According to the KBA, 380,609 battery-electric vehicles were newly registered last year - a good quarter fewer than in 2023.

"We are looking back on a year of missed opportunities for e-mobility," said Thomas Peckruhn, Vice President of the German Motor Vehicle Trade and spokesman for the aftermarket in Germany. According to the report, new registrations of e-vehicles increased in all other European countries, including the United Kingdom. Only in Germany have politicians still not recognized the need for action regarding the framework conditions for the ramp-up of e-mobility.
