More charging points for e-cars - Leipzig leads the way

In Saxony, the number of public charging points for electric cars has risen by 17 percent within a year. A total of around 5,800 connections were available as of February 1, according to an overview by the Federal Network Agency. This included around 1,450 fast-charging points with a capacity of at least 22 kilowatts.

Leipzig overtakes Dresden

The largest selection was in Leipzig (1,072 charging points). With an increase of around 250 compared to 2024, the trade fair city overtook the previous leader Dresden (954). The district of Zwickau was in third place with 689 charging points. The district of North Saxony remained in last place with only 198 connections, ahead of the district of Meißen (227) and the Vogtland district (232).

According to data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority, around 38,600 electric cars (2024: around 33,200) and 28,800 plug-in hybrid cars (2024: around 23,400) were registered in Saxony as of January 1, 2025. This means that there were more than 11 cars with charging requirements for every public charging point.

Saarland brings up the rear nationwide

Germany had 161,700 charging points as of the reporting date - an increase of 21% compared to 2024. Saxony was in the lower midfield in a nationwide comparison between Rhineland-Palatinate (around 6,300) and Berlin (around 5,700). The most charging points were located in the most populous federal states of Bavaria (31,500), North Rhine-Westphalia (31,100) and Baden-Württemberg (27,800). In last place is Saarland (1,200).
