One of Germany's largest hydrogen projects is to be built at the Piesteritz Chemical Park (Wittenberg district) in Saxony-Anhalt. According to Leipzig-based energy company VNG, an electrolyser for the production of green hydrogen with a capacity of 500 megawatts is to be built by 2029.
Electrolysers with a capacity of 200 and 280 megawatts are currently planned in Lingen and Emden, among other locations. Green hydrogen is to be produced from water using electricity from renewable energies in order to replace natural gas in the future. Stickstoffwerke Piesteritz, one of Germany's largest natural gas consumers, is located in the chemical park.
500 megawatts for electrolyser as an important factor
At the presentation of the plans, Saxony-Anhalt Minister President Reiner Haseloff (CDU) described the project as an important step into the future of the state. 500 megawatts of power is an important parameter that is being awaited. In order to maintain the industrial base in Germany, it is important to provide good location conditions for energy-intensive sectors such as the chemical industry.
According to the company, the "Greenroot" project is being operated by VNG and the Dutch hydrogen company HyCC. The approval phase is set to begin next year and the final investment decision will be made in 2026. The domestic production of green hydrogen is intended to strengthen the Central German region as an important industrial location in the long term.
