People in Leipzig no longer use their cars for most of their daily journeys, but walk instead. Bicycles and public transport are also being used more frequently.

People in Leipzig walk most of their daily journeys. This is the result of the city's recently presented mobility survey. 33 percent of journeys are made on foot, 31 percent by car, one in five (20 percent) by bicycle and 16 percent by public transport. In 2023, the Technical University of Dresden surveyed around 3,500 people from 2,000 households in Leipzig about their mobility behavior.

Car journeys have decreased by 11 percent compared to the 2018 survey. By contrast, cycling, walking and public transport have increased significantly. "The results of the survey show that the implementation of the Mobility Strategy 2030 is working. More and more Leipzig residents are relying on eco-mobility, i.e. walking, cycling or using public transport more frequently," said Thomas Dienberg, Leipzig's Mayor for Urban Development and Construction.
