In the Chemnitz model, several lines connect the city with the surrounding area. The trains use railroad and streetcar lines. A new depot is now to be built for this purpose.

In the coming years, Verkehrsverbund Mittelsachsen plans to invest more than 234 million euros in the construction of a new railroad depot and 19 new trains on the Chemnitz Model routes. The depot, where trains will be parked, cleaned and maintained, is to be built at the main railway station, according to the transport association. The documents for the planning approval procedure will be submitted at the end of the year, with commissioning planned for 2027.

So far, the trains have been based at the depot of Chemnitzer Verkehrs-AG, which operates streetcar and bus lines in the city. However, this depot was bursting at the seams. The aim is therefore to relieve the pressure, especially as further expansion stages are planned for the Chemnitz Model route network. It connects the city and the surrounding area with connections to Aue, Stollberg, Hainichen, Mittweida and Burgstädt. Further connections to Limbach-Oberfrohna, St. Egidien and the Ore Mountains are planned for the future.

The new all-electric Citylink trains from the manufacturer Stadler can reportedly use both streetcar and railroad overhead lines. The manufacturer is not only responsible for the delivery, but also for the maintenance of the trains over a period of 15 years, it said. The VMS intends to present its project at the InnoTrans transport technology trade fair in Berlin next week.

The new railroad depot is being planned with a 120-metre-long workshop building. It will also have 31 tracks with a total length of seven kilometers.
