Volkswagen is examining options for the Gläserne Manufaktur Dresden, where the ID.3 is assembled. Future of the site and its employees uncertain.

Volkswagen is considering ending car production at the Gläserne Manufaktur Dresden. "Vehicle production is difficult to present with such a number of units and the logistics situation in the middle of Dresden," said brand boss Thomas Schäfer on Thursday at the annual press conference of the Group's volume group consisting of the core brand Volkswagen, Skoda, Seat/Cupra and VW Commercial Vehicles. VW is therefore currently working on future scenarios for the site and the employees there. "Dresden is already a site that not only assembles the ID.3, but also carries out development work and delivers to customers. We are currently reviewing how we want to move forward there." However, a final decision has not yet been made.

According to VW Saxony, a good 6000 ID.3s were assembled at the Gläserne Manufaktur last year, with 340 employees working at the site. In total, VW Saxony produced more than 250,000 vehicles in 2023, most of them at the Zwickau plant with more than 10,000 employees. The Transparent Factory was built for the assembly of the Phaeton luxury model from 2002, which was discontinued in 2016. The ID.3 electric model has been assembled there since 2021, in addition to Zwickau. Due to the current low demand for e-cars, VW announced just last week that it was abandoning the previously planned overflow production of the ID.3 in Wolfsburg.
