Saxony has an acute shortage of teachers. The Ministry of Education therefore wants older teachers to work more. The AfD sees capacities lying idle, particularly in the administration.

In the opinion of the AfD, too many teachers in Saxony are working in the office instead of in the classroom. Currently, 262 teachers work at various locations of the State Office for Schools and Education, the parliamentary group announced following a minor question in the state parliament. Perhaps not all of them could transfer to a school immediately, "but almost all of them", said MP Frank Peschel. "Less office, more school!" should be the new motto. There are also employees in other authorities who could teach.

In its response to the inquiry, the Ministry of Education stated that none of the teachers named could be released from their duties at the State Office for Schools and Education with immediate effect and deployed in the school service in order to minimize the loss of teaching.

Saxony wants to halve the loss of teaching

The ministry recently announced its goal of halving the loss of teaching. There is currently a shortfall of at least 1,400 full-time teachers. In the first half of the 2024/2025 school year, 9.4 percent of lessons were canceled. According to the ministry's ideas, older teachers are to work more, among other things. To this end, previous regulations on the so-called age reduction will be changed.

Urban: Teaching absenteeism destroys career opportunities for young people

AfD party and parliamentary group leader Jörg Urban accused the government of not understanding the extent of the problem. He suggested, for example, that exams should be supervised by student teachers in future before teachers spend their valuable working time on them.
