The number of children in Saxony is expected to fall in the coming years. Will staff have to leave or will nurseries even have to close? A moratorium should prevent this.

The education union GEW Sachsen is calling for a moratorium on daycare centers and an improvement in the staffing ratio at daycare centers. According to the GEW, 20 other organizations have joined the call, including the AWO City Association Chemnitz, the Child Protection Association Leipzig and the Volkssolidarität Leipzig. GEW state chairman Burkhard Neumann is calling for the state government to immediately introduce a moratorium on daycare center closures and staff cuts. A lot of time could be lost due to the expected lengthy process of forming a government. "The daycare providers and employees now need a legally secure commitment from the state government against falling subsidies."

Currently, the staffing ratio in Saxony's daycare law is leading to staff cuts and the closure of facilities due to falling child numbers. According to the GEW, the moratorium is intended to ensure that the state subsidies for nursery staff continue to be paid to local authorities and independent providers at the same level. The Left Party in the Saxon state parliament has already submitted a corresponding motion for the state parliament session on September 26.
