In 2022, Saxony spent around 8600 euros on the education of a pupil at a public school. This was around 200 euros more than in the previous year, according to preliminary results released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) in Wiesbaden on Wednesday. Saxony was therefore below the national average of 9500 euros and an increase of around 300 euros compared to 2021.
According to the data, three quarters of total expenditure nationwide (7200 euros) was for personnel costs. "The remaining funds were made available for current operating expenses (1300 euros or 14 percent) and investments (900 euros or 10 percent)."
There were some clear differences between the different types of school: per capita expenditure at elementary school amounted to 8,200 euros, while the average per pupil at integrated comprehensive schools was around 11,400 euros. An average of 10,500 euros was spent at grammar schools. Expenditure at vocational schools was significantly lower at 6700. The reason for this was the predominantly part-time teaching at vocational schools within the dual training system.
Expenditure also differed geographically: With the exception of Saxony-Anhalt, expenditure per pupil increased in all federal states in 2022. The city states had the highest expenditure with an average of 13,000 euros. Berlin came in at 14,000 euros, Hamburg at 12,300 euros and Bremen at 9,900 euros. In the territorial states, expenditure varied between 8400 euros in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and 10,400 euros in Bavaria.
