If you want to refresh yourself on a summer's day, you will have to do without the cool water in the Pirk reservoir. The health authority warns of blue-green algae.

The health authority in the Vogtland district has detected an increased amount of blue-green algae in the Pirk reservoir and has advised against swimming in the water. This is according to a statement from the Vogtlandkreis district office. According to the statement, the first streaks of green algae were discovered at the end of July during checks on the banks of the water. As a result, water samples were taken by the public health department last week. The analyses confirmed the suspicion.

The health authority advises caution. If cloudy water or green streaks appear, people should not bathe there. Dogs should also refrain, as they are particularly sensitive.

In case of certain symptoms, consult a doctor immediately

A few days ago, blue-green algae were already discovered in the Quitzdorf reservoir (district of Görlitz). There, too, the public health department warned against the use of water by humans and animals and advised people to consult a doctor immediately in the event of symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, shortness of breath, skin irritation or wheals.

Blue-green algae occur in stagnant water, especially in the summer months when water temperatures are high. A bluish-greenish turbidity of the water and streaking are signs of the presence of the bacteria.
