More and more refugees and asylum seekers are arriving in Saxony - which is why the Free State is desperately seeking further accommodation. There is still no overcrowding, but currently the available capacities are almost maxed out, said a spokeswoman for the Saxony State Directorate (LDS) at the request of dpa.
According to the LDS, since September 2023, the numbers of arrivals and thus the capacity utilization in Saxony's initial reception facilities have been rising sharply. Therefore, the Free State of Saxony is currently examining options for expanding capacity. Further tent or container solutions are also being considered. For an accommodation in gymnasiums there are so far no concrete plans in the LDS.
In the official calculation of the Ministry of the Interior are still some beds free in the reception facilities in Leipzig, Dresden and Chemnitz. It should be noted, however, that in practice never all places of a reception facility can be occupied. For example, to avoid conflicts, families and women are accommodated separately from men traveling alone, the ministry said in response to a query. Thus, no non-family third parties are added to a room occupied by a family. In some cases, the separation also takes place with regard to nationality or religion. This inevitably leads to beds that cannot be occupied. Currently, more than 100 asylum seekers and refugees from Ukraine are added daily.
So in Leipzig, the building of the former Friesenkrankenhaus has recently been used for the accommodation, care and support of unaccompanied minor foreigners. So far, 30 young people have moved into the premises, according to the city. Due to further foreseeable new admissions, the occupancy capacity is to be expanded step by step. The accommodation is to be used in perspective as an educational residential group.
