The AfD in Saxony plans to nominate its candidates for the state list for the federal elections in February at a two-day party conference this weekend (Saturday from 10.00 am). Among the candidates is the party's co-founder and honorary chairman, Alexander Gauland, as well as federal party chairman Tino Chrupalla. Around 400 to 500 members are expected to attend the party conference in Löbau. The Office for the Protection of the Constitution classifies the party in Saxony as confirmed right-wing extremist.
The AfD district association in Görlitz had already selected Chrupalla as a direct candidate for the Bundestag elections on November 17, and he intends to run for the first place on the list. Chrupalla had already clearly won his constituency of Görlitz in the previous Bundestag election. Member of the European Parliament Maximilian Krah, who recently appeared at several events in the Chemnitz area according to media reports, could also run for election.
The next Bundestag election is expected to take place on February 23, 2025 following the end of the traffic light system. In the previous election, the AfD won 24.6 percent of the popular vote in Saxony, leaving the CDU far behind with 17.2 percent.
