Christian Hartmann continues to lead the CDU parliamentary group in the Saxon state parliament. At the constituent meeting, the 50-year-old was re-elected with 95 percent. "As the CDU in the state parliament, we want to continue the good work of the previous legislature. We need a strong CDU parliamentary group to ensure political stability, economic progress, internal security and a good education policy," explained Hartmannn afterwards. "Saxony is a great state and it is up to us how it develops over the next five years."
At the same time, Hartmann prepared for a challenging few weeks ahead. The political situation is more complicated than it was five years ago: "In the exploratory talks and coalition negotiations, we are laying the foundations for our political success in this legislature. I want to conduct these negotiations with the necessary pragmatism, political foresight and determination. It is already clear that a possible new coalition will not be a love match. We want a stable government for our home state."
In the state elections on Sunday, the CDU/CSU won 31.9 percent of the vote in Saxony, just ahead of the AfD (30.6 percent). As CDU Minister President Michael Kretschmer categorically rules out cooperation with the AfD and the Left, the CDU/CSU only has an alliance with the BSW (11.8 percent) and the SPD (7.3 percent) or with the BSW and the Greens (5.1 percent).
