Corona U Committee: AfD calls on BSW for support

The AfD is calling on the BSW to support its motion for a committee of inquiry to investigate the coronavirus pandemic. As the BSW also formulated in a similar motion, the aim of his parliamentary group is to "objectively and factually investigate the actions and possible omissions of the Saxon state government and its subordinate authorities" during the pandemic, writes parliamentary group leader and AfD leader Jörg Urban in an open letter to the BSW parliamentary group.

With a view to the BSW's ongoing exploratory talks with the CDU and SPD, Urban demands that "the goal of coming to terms with this unfortunate time should take precedence over the sensitivities of your two negotiating partners". If there are individual aspects that are not included in the AfD's motion, the BSW could submit amendments. "We are not opposed to this," added Urban at a press conference on Tuesday.

AfD motion with sufficient supporting signatures

Only the AfD motion will lead to an inquiry committee, as it has a sufficient number of supporting signatures. In addition, the motion was accompanied by formal legal objections from the legal service in the state parliament. It is also intended to prevent two committees of inquiry from being set up. According to the AfD, it would be possible in this case for other parties to have the matter examined by the Constitutional Court.

The Saxon state parliament will decide on parliamentary committees of inquiry to investigate the coronavirus pandemic in a special session on Friday. The state parliament has received two motions from the AfD parliamentary group and the parliamentary group Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW). The establishment of a sub-committee requires the approval of one fifth of the 120 MPs - 24 votes. The AfD has 40 seats in the state parliament, the BSW 15.
