Christmas is a time for reflection. During this time, the tax authorities should refrain from taking measures that could be perceived as inappropriate.

The citizens of Saxony will only have to deal with the tax authorities in exceptional cases between Christmas and New Year. Finance Minister Hartmut Vorjohann (CDU) has asked the Saxon finance ministers for a "Christmas truce". In particular, no external audits are to take place from December 23rd to New Year and no enforcement measures are to be carried out, as the Ministry announced on request. In addition, the sending of reminders will be temporarily suspended for technical reasons. Automatic reminders will only be sent out again from January 2.

Exceptions to the so-called Christmas truce are possible in the event of imminent danger or an impending statute of limitations. In addition, tax assessments will continue to be issued without restriction.

The Christmas truce is intended to take into account the special nature of Christmas and thus make a small contribution to a good relationship between taxpayers and tax offices, it was added. Possible comparable regulations for cities and municipalities are not the responsibility of the State Ministry of Finance.

In response to an inquiry, the city of Dresden announced that it would not be issuing any seizure and confiscation orders in the period from December 6, 2023 to January 5, 2024. Home visits, vehicle seizures and home searches by the enforcement field service will not be carried out from December 20 to January 1, 2024, it said.
