The former mayor of Freiberg, Sven Krüger, has won the district council election in the district of Central Saxony. The 51-year-old, who was put forward by the Free Voters and the CDU, achieved the required absolute majority with 50.3 percent in the first round of voting. He received 65,607 of the 130,533 valid votes cast.
AfD candidate Jens Tamke was less clearly behind in second place with 21,188 votes, achieving only 34%. 242,075 people were called to vote, with a voter turnout of 54.3 percent.
Mario Lorenz (SPD), Cindy Reimer (Die Linke) and Stefan Trautmann, who stood for the far-right Free Saxons, also ran for the office.
Old district administrator resigned prematurely
The vote had become necessary because Dirk Neubauer had resigned prematurely from the post of district administrator. He had become district administrator in 2022 as a non-party candidate with the support of the SPD, Left Party and Greens and was actually elected until 2029, but announced his withdrawal last July. He justified his decision primarily with personal hostility from the right and a lack of opportunities to assert himself. Neubauer had not been in office since October 2024.
