From the point of view of Saxony's head of government, the breakdown of the talks came as a surprise. The question now is what happens next.

Saxony's Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) has blamed BSW namesake Sahra Wagenknecht for the failure of the exploratory talks to form a joint three-party coalition with the SPD. "The fact that Ms. Wagenknecht is putting her Saxon people on the back foot like this is not a good development," said Kretschmer, speaking of a great disappointment. He thought it was a great pity for Saxony.

According to Kretschmer, the termination of the exploratory talks came as a surprise. "We didn't see it that way." This decision was not made by anyone in Saxony. The decision was made in Berlin.

At the same time, Kretschmer once again ruled out working with the AfD. On Tuesday, he had a confidential meeting with AfD leader Jörg Urban. The meeting took place at the request of the AfD. Kretschmer did not want to refuse out of respect for the parliament.

According to Kretschmer, the party committees will now discuss how to proceed. A pause for thought over the weekend is now needed. The Prime Minister had always rejected a minority government, but as things stand, he now has no other choice.
