Saxon state parliament elects committees and bodies

The Saxon state parliament plans to appoint committees and set up the specialist committees at its meeting on Wednesday. Until now, a main committee set up for the constituent session of parliament had regulated the tasks. According to Sören Voigt, Parliamentary Secretary of the CDU parliamentary group, eleven committees are planned as before. They each have 18 members, one less than before.

At the same time, the members of parliament will also elect the members of the Parliamentary Control Commission (PKK), the Parliamentary Control Panel and the so-called G-10 Commission of the state parliament.

Parliamentary Control Commission to monitor secret service

The PKK is made up of five members of parliament, two of whom must be from the opposition. Their task is to monitor the activities of the state government in overseeing the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution - as well as the activities of the State Office itself. The PKK members must maintain confidentiality about information in the secret meetings.

The G-10 Commission reviews the permissibility and necessity of all surveillance of the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution ordered by the Ministry of the Interior, which restricts the secrecy of correspondence, post and telecommunications. The Parliamentary Control Committee exercises control over the surveillance of homes using technical means and other police measures with special means.

AfD wants to keep Carsten Hütter in the PKK

In the run-up to the meeting, there had been discussions among the Left, the Greens and the SPD about whether an AfD member could be elected to the PKK as before. The Saxon state association of the AfD is classified by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution as a secure right-wing extremist organization. The AfD has nominated Federal Treasurer Carsten Hütter to monitor the secret service. He has already held this office.

The CDU saw no problem with the appointment in advance. They respect the will of the voters, said Voigt. "As long as this party is not banned and this party can be elected and was also elected by the population, this parliament is of course also a reflection of this election result."
