Saxony's Greens enter federal election campaign with old board

Saxony's Greens are keeping their state executive committee due to the upcoming federal elections. At a state assembly in Chemnitz, the delegates of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen voted for all six current members of the party leadership.

State spokesperson Christin Furtenbacher spoke of a major challenge in view of the coming weeks. "Let's stand up for what sets us apart with full Green Party self-confidence: consistent commitment to climate justice, human rights and peace in Europe." These are values "for which we are used to tough headwinds", she told those present.

However, the committee in its current form will only assume responsibility for a limited period of time. "Next spring, we will clear the way for a fresh start in terms of personnel," said co-state spokesperson Marie Müser, symbolically handing over a green baton to the future successors.

Resignation of the state association leadership already known

The board announced its resignation at the end of November with a view to the federal elections, which were brought forward following the surprising break-up of the Berlin traffic light coalition.

Müser and Furtenbacher justified the decision, which they said was also criticized, in Chemnitz by saying they wanted to rely on experience and well-established structures in the election campaign. An extension of the term of office was not possible according to the party law.

Landtag election evaluation already took place in November

The state association already discussed its disappointing performance in the state election on September 1 two weeks ago and also exercised self-criticism. The former governing party, which currently has 4,500 members across the state, plummeted from 8.9% to 5.1% and only just made it into the state parliament.
