The Left Party is currently experiencing a real boom. In Saxony, they are once again ahead in terms of membership figures after a wave of new members in recent weeks.

The Left Party is experiencing a renaissance. Following its successful performance in the federal elections, the party is now once again the strongest force in Saxony in terms of membership. The day after the election, the 10,000 member mark was exceeded, the party announced. More than 3,200 new members have joined since the beginning of the year, most recently around 100 every day. The Left Party now has as many members as it last had in 2012. Nationwide, the Saxon state association ranks behind North Rhine-Westphalia and Berlin in terms of membership.

Around 100 new members join the Left Party every day

"We are thrilled by the continuing wave of new members. The new members are between 14 and 84 years old, from all over Saxony and represent the breadth of Saxon society," emphasized state managing director Lars Kleba. They are looking forward to involving many people in the party's work and want to stay in touch with people even after the parliamentary elections - for example with door-to-door talks, information stands and social consultation hours. The party could really use the support and drive of the many new members.

Oldest party member is 105 years old

According to the party, the average age of its members is 46.2 years. The age range extends from 14 to 105 years.

The Left Party received 8.8 percent of the vote in the Bundestag elections after falling below the five percent threshold in 2021 and only being able to re-enter the Bundestag thanks to winning three direct mandates. In Saxony, it achieved 11.3% of the second votes and won a direct mandate in Leipzig with Sören Pellmann.

In terms of membership, the Left Party in Saxony is followed by the CDU with around 9,500 members. The SPD currently has a good 4,550, the Greens 4,500 and the AfD more than 3,600 - with a rising trend. Only the FDP, which has not been represented in the Saxon state parliament since 2014 and is no longer represented in the Bundestag, has seen its membership drop from around 2,000 to 1,900 within a year. The Sahra Wagenknecht alliance has around 80 members one year after it was founded, but now wants to expand its structures.
