The seasonal flu epidemic in Saxony is over, according to the State Research Institute, with a decline in reported respiratory illnesses.

The seasonal flu epidemic is over in Saxony. As the State Investigation Institute (LUA) stated in its latest report published on Friday, the decline in reported respiratory illnesses continued in the second week of April. The number of reported cases of influenza and Covid-19 infections was again lower than in the previous week, while the number of RSV-related illnesses (respiratory syncytial virus) fell by more than a third.

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the flu epidemic ended in the penultimate week of March, as reported by the LUA. Nevertheless, influenza cases continued to occur in all age groups, with fewer cases still being registered in under-one-year-olds, adolescents and young adults. RSV infections, on the other hand, mainly affect infants and young children, while coronavirus infections particularly affect older people.

Since the start of the current season in October 2023, 377 deaths have been registered in connection with a Sars-CoV-2 infection. These were people between the ages of 39 and 99. The overall statistics show 113 influenza deaths between the ages of 11 and 99, as well as eleven women and nine men between the ages of 43 and 99 who died from an RSV infection. By last week, a total of 25,804 corona cases had been reported, influenza was confirmed in 21,342 cases and RSV 7053 times.
