The Dresden Residence Palace is home to historical collections that once emerged from the princely Kunstkammer. From December, a new place for contemporary art will be created there with the "Kunstkammer Gegenwart", as the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (SKD) announced on Tuesday. In the former princely gallery, a show depot will be established according to a design by the renowned designer Konstantin Grčić. In the future, works from the Hoffmann Collection donation, but also from the Kunstfonds or the affiliated Günther and Annemarie Gercken Foundation will be shown there. An "Open Workshop" will also make the handling of modern, fragile materials visible.
The collection of Erika and Rolf Hoffmann is one of the most important private collections internationally, its beginnings date back to the 1960s. The widow of the entrepreneur had given in 2018 about 1200 works from 1910 to the present - painting, photography, drawing, sculpture, film and video art, installation - to the SKD. In early September, Frank Stella's wall sculpture from the series "Moby Dick" traveled from Berlin to Dresden as a harbinger, which already "creates an arch between history and the present" at the baroque English Staircase in the castle.
The establishment of the "Kunstkammer Gegenwart" represents the final move of the works donated to the SKD by the Hoffmann donation. This brings works by Isa Genzken, Antony Gormley, Keith Haring, Rebecca Horn, William Kentridge, Imi Knoebel, Bruce Nauman, A. R. Penck, Sigmar Polke, Wolfgang Tillmans, Cy Twombly and Andy Warhol to the Fürstengalerie.
