In his collaboration with his prominent father Devid Striesow, actor Ludwig Simon leaves out their shared family experience. In the drama "Bach - Ein Weihnachtswunder" (18.12., 20.15, Das Erste), the two play leading roles together for the first time. The film is about the premiere of Bach's Christmas Oratorio from 1734.
"I left out our real family dynamics and concentrated on preparing for the role," said Simon (26) in a dpa interview. "Even when it came to family conflicts, I really looked for that in my character Emanuel. Where his drive comes from and what he needs and wants from his father and the others in the family."
Bach's music still connects people today
He can well understand the reverence for Bach, said Simon. "Now after the shoot and even before, yes. It's amazing to see how a musician continues to shape music history and the present day. I believe that music has the ability to connect people and it still does today," explained the 26-year-old, whose mother is Maria Simon, a well-known actress.
Ludwig Simon, who plays Emanuel Bach, plays guitar, piano and drums privately. "I haven't really mastered the instruments, it's enough for a campfire with the well-known songs," said the actor. His knowledge of classical music is reflected more in classical film soundtracks, where he knows a few composers and works. "And now, thanks to this film, a lot more of Bach."
Sore shin muscles
Were there any particular challenges with this historical figure? "The shoes were a big challenge," said Simon. "So huge respect to anyone who likes wearing high heels! I'd never done that before this project and I've never had so much soreness in my shins as on this set."
